How Oral Health Affects Your Overall Health

You probably know already that good oral health is paramount for a beautiful and lasting smile. So, you brush and floss daily and visit your dentist regularly

But, did you know that good oral health means more than just a healthy smile? In fact, your oral health can dramatically influence your overall well-being.

How is that possible?

Let's find out!

Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body

Most of us tend to think of our oral health and general health as two separate entities. In reality, they are more connected than you may realize.

Your mouth is the entryway for millions of bacteria. Most of them are harmless and our bodies can keep them under control IF you practice good oral hygiene.

When the number of bacteria gets out of control and they multiply at a fast rate, they can enter the bloodstream and affect your health.

One study found that oral health is one of the ten main indicators of good overall health.

Health Issues Caused By Bad Oral Health

Poor oral health might contribute to numerous conditions, such as:

  • Cardiovascular Disease

Although the connection has yet to be established, research suggests that gum disease can lead to cardiovascular problems. One study found that people who suffer from periodontal disease are twice more likely to suffer from heart disease.

  • Dementia

One large study found that the bacteria responsible for gum disease can also lead to Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias. When left untreated, bacteria from the gums can enter the bloodstream and travel to the brain

  • Respiratory Infections

Bacteria from your mouth can also travel to your lungs, causing various respiratory infections, such as pneumonia.

  • Diabetes

It's been shown that people with gum disease have a more difficult time controlling their blood sugar levels. These spikes can increase your chances of developing diabetes. But, the connection is two-way. Because it's more difficult for people with diabetes to control their blood sugar levels, their risk of developing gum diseases is higher.

  • Pregnancy Complications

Pregnancy can increase your risk of developing certain oral health problems. Left untreated, these problems can affect your unborn baby. One study found a connection between gum disease and premature birth.

  • Kidney Disease

Cavities and gum disease are usually a sign that bacteria in your mouth multiplied beyond control. When that happens, chronic inflammation can occur in different parts of your body, such as the kidneys. If you already suffer from kidney disease, oral health problems can further exacerbate your condition.

  • Arthritis

Studies have found that the bacteria that cause gingivitis can also trigger arthritis.
